Too Soggy to Practice No comments yet

The Morse High School lacrosse program would like to remind the community of the fundraising efforts for the program Fields For Our Future.

Fields For Our Future is designed to provide a future for Bath athletics by removing the grass on McMann Field and replacing it with artificial astroturf. The spring sports season started March 28, three weeks ago, but neither of the Morse lacrosse teams have even stepped outside for practice. For three weeks both the boy’s and girl’s teams have practiced in tight cramped spaces smaller than a basketball court. The area is unable to provide adequate practice space for either teams. Even on sunny days we have been forced to practice inside due to wet fields from previous days’ rain.

Student athletes participating in the lacrosse program would like to point out that if the city of Bath had an artificial turf field, both teams would have unrestricted practice outdoors in a playable environment. Thank you.

Leaf-rakers earn kudos

As a supporter of the turf-field project in Bath, I was happy to sign up to have my leaves raked by local kids, who will someday benefit from playing on this field.

Imagine my surprise when at 8 a.m. this past Saturday morning, four Morse High School senior athletes walked up my driveway with rakes in hand!

Think about this for a moment;  it was a Saturday morning, early in the eyes of any teenager, let alone senior athletes, during probably the busiest time of their senior year. More importantly, not one of these athletes will ever get a chance to play on this turf-field during their high school athletic careers.

I was — and am — so impressed! Good for them!  They clearly support this “pie in the sky” project, realizing their high school sports careers will end before the project is complete.

Thank you to the Fields for our Future committee for this community-building fund-raising idea, to Mary Sreden for her hours spent coordinating the event, and to Morse High seniors Jessie Blum, Zach Shaw, Hannah Milam, Alyssa Baxter and all the other leaf rakers.

I will continue to support your goal so all kids will get a chance to practice and compete on a safe playing field.
